The Origin of Ganesh Giri The area originally known as Muthukurussi Mala was acquired by the railway. While constructing railway quarters there, a Ganesha idol was discovered underground. Because of this, the location formerly known as Muthukurussi Kunnu came to be called Ganesh Giri. In 1966 (the Malayalam year 1142), a group of North Malabar natives working as railway employees in Ganesh Giri celebrated the Theyyam art form of Sree Parassinikadavu Muthappan. This took place at the exact site where the Madappura stands today. Sri. Narayanan, Sri. K. Balakrishna Kurup, and Sri. Balakrishna Kurup spearheaded this initiative. On the evening following the Theyyam, while preparing to auction the remaining items, Sri. Kunhiraman placed a photo of Lord Muthappan at the performance site and lit a lamp. He suggested that the lamp could be kept lit until the leftover oil was finished. While Sri. Narayanan and Sri. Balakrishna Kurup (from Vadakara) were standing there deciding on a permanent location for Muthappan's photo, a passing carpenter (Aashari) understood their desire and determined the exact spot. After performing a Ganapathi pooja, a wooden peg was driven into that spot, a platform was built, Muthappan's photo was placed there, and the pooja began.
For approximately two years, the Theyyam was conducted under the supervision of Sri. Balakrishna Kurup. After that, a committee was formed with Sri. K. Balakrishna Kurup (a native of Vadakara) as Secretary, Sri. O.P.G. Menon as President, and Sri. Prabhakaran Nair as Treasurer. From 1968 to April 1993, Sri. Balakrishna Kurup (from Vadakara) served as the Secretary of the Muthappan temple. Following his passing, a new committee took over. Priests (Poojaris) Sri. Raman was the temple's first priest. Later, during a performance, a divine command (Kalpana) entrusted Sri. Sreedharan with the pooja duties. After he stepped down, Sri. Balakrishna Kurup (the Secretary) continued as the priest. At that time, the Payamkutti Pooja was only conducted on Saturdays. On all other days, young boys would light the lamp for Muthappan. After the passing of Sri. Balakrishna Kurup, his son Sri. Krishnadas took over. Later, a new committee was formed at the temple, and Sri. Mohandas was appointed as the new priest. After Sri. Mohandas, during a performance, Lord Muthappan issued a divine command declaring Sri. Kannan as the new priest. Kalasham Bearers (Kalashakkar) In the early years, Sri. Krishnan was Muthappan's Kalashakkaran. However, due to physical health issues, Sri. M.C. Raghavan took over the position. After his passing, his eldest son, Sri. Rajesh, continues to serve as the Kalashakkaran at the Madappura.
